Where are you, America?
Has your glory finally faded
Though the blood through which we waded,
From each fallen hero shed,
Stained our banner blazing red?
Has your faith, patient, loyal and true,
Dimmed like the sky to gray from blue?
Each tear, each loss, each lonely, starless night
Added to our banner white,
Like Death's pale, cold embrace
Touched each dying warrior's face.
Where are you, America?
Have you forgotten those souls who died to save
This once land of the free and home of the brave?
Where is the passion and the zeal
That bore them up in woe and weal?
Where is that hope, so pure and bright,
Calling them to stand and fight,
That they would give their last full measure
For liberty, their precious treasure?
Our brave banner now lies torn,
Each star, it's brilliance worn,
And our people with their tears,
Aching losses, selfish fears,
Made its colors sadly blent
In a hue that was not meant.
Where are you, America?
Did our fathers bear the strife, the pain,
Did they sacrifice their all in vain?
Or is this heritage ours to claim,
Rather than bow our heads in shame,
In defeat, to surrender the patriot dream,
Our national honor and self-esteem?
Is the torch still ours, to bear it up,
To bravely drink life's bitter cup?
Shall we stand alone in peace, in war?
Shall liberty shine from shore to shore?
If these be true, why can't I find
Others of this noble mind?
Has that race passed on, like Autumn's colors turning,
To complacency, cold indifference, from the freedom fire burning?
America, I would die for you
If I could only find you.
